Five years ago, there was minimal talk of Agile Project Management. At that time, project management from the PMI was considered strictly Waterfall and Command and Control.

As a counterbalance, there is also the perception that Scrum is a project management approach and that the Scrum Master and Product Owner make up the role of the traditional PM.

Unfortunately, this has led to significant frustration in project and product delivery, including:

  • Lack of business focus, even in the simplest of terms.
  • Lack of effective collaboration across the organization.
  • And less than stellar results and low impact in improving time to market.

The idea of Scrum and its purpose to manifest the Agile Manifesto for delivery is spot on. Especially the use of the Manifesto, but our perspective is you would be better served to do what Scrum did but for your situation.

Use the four values and twelve principles of the Agile Manifesto to manifest your agile delivery model, but leverage the Project Management Institute’s approach to provide governance, risk management, and business acumen to create something outstanding for your situation.

This way of using agile with PMI’s PMP is now available with the release of the PMBOK 7.

The PMBOK version 7 is principle-based, including:

  • Servant Leadership.
  • Going to the people closest to work for estimates.
  • Strong focus on scope decomposition (Nouns) and letting tasks flow from that.
  • Stakeholder Identification and Communication Management, which is absent from both SAFe and Scrum and leaves a considerable risk for any project or product creation
  • Updated Risk Management techniques that take a lean approach to risk management.
  • Flexible Scope management and rolling wave funding, including Venture capital funding models.

There is much more to PMI PMBOK version seven update, but the key differentiator is BUSINESS ACUMEN. The business acumen within the PMBOC version 7 is an excellent guide for any project, agile or otherwise.
